Goat breeds registered by CGS

Our first purebred goats were imported from Europe. These animals were superior dairy stock, and have continued to be bred in Canada for greater longevity and productivity.

Six dairy breeds are recognized in this country: Alpine, Saanen, Toggenburg and Oberhasli are European in origin, and are collectively known as the "Swiss" breeds. The Nubian breed was developed from African and Indian goats bred to European dairy breeds in England, and was initially called the Anglo-Nubian. The LaMancha was bred from short-eared goats observed in southern North America and is now a well recognized dairy breed on this continent.

The mohair producing goat of Turkey, the Angora, and the miniature African breeds, Nigerian Dwarf and Pygmy, have also been imported and their registration entrusted to the Canadian Goat Society.
